Social Media or Website First?

"Should I invest in social media or a website?"

I get this question a lot. Here's my honest take.

The Short Answer

Website first. Always.

Why?

You Own Your Website

Instagram can change its algorithm tomorrow and your reach drops to zero. Facebook can suspend your page. TikTok might get banned. Your website is yours. No one can take it away.

Your Website Works 24/7

Social media posts disappear from feeds in hours. Your website is always there, always findable, always working.

Google Sends You Buyers

People on social media are browsing. People on Google are searching. When someone Googles "plumber near me," they're ready to hire. When someone scrolls past your Instagram post, they might remember you... eventually.

You Need Somewhere To Send People

Even if social media is your main channel, where do you send people who want to learn more? A website gives you a home base.

When Social Media Comes First

There are exceptions:

  • You sell visual products (art, food, fashion) — Instagram is your portfolio
  • You're a personal brand — social proof matters more than a website
  • You have zero budget — a good Instagram profile is better than a bad website
  • My Recommendation

  • Get a simple website (even just one page) — from $599
  • Set up Google Business Profile — it's free
  • Then worry about social media
  • In that order.
