Social Media Strategy for Local Businesses

You don't need to go viral. You don't need to dance on TikTok. You just need to show up consistently and connect with your community. Here's how.

Choose Your Platforms (Don't Try to Be Everywhere)

The biggest mistake small businesses make is trying to be on every platform. Pick one or two and do them well.

Instagram

Best for: Visual businesses — cafes, restaurants, retail, accommodation, wellness, trades (showing off your work)

Instagram is where Raglan thrives. The surf, the sunsets, the food — it's a visual town. If your business has anything worth photographing, Instagram should be your primary platform.

Facebook

Best for: Community-oriented businesses, events, older demographics, local groups

Facebook Groups are gold for local businesses. "Raglan Community" and similar groups are where people ask for recommendations. Being active (not salesy) in these groups builds organic awareness.

TikTok

Best for: Businesses with personality, younger audiences, how-to content

If you're comfortable on camera and your target audience is under 40, TikTok can be incredibly powerful. Short, authentic videos perform better than polished content.

Google Business (Yes, It's Social Too)

Post updates, photos, and offers directly to your Google Business Profile. These show up in search results — arguably more valuable than any social media post.

Content That Works for Local Businesses

The 4-1-1 Rule

For every 6 posts:

  • 4 posts that educate or entertain (value-first content)
  • 1 post that's a soft promotion (behind the scenes, new product tease)
  • 1 post that's a direct promotion (sale, offer, CTA)
  • Content Ideas That Never Get Old

    Behind the scenes

  • Setting up for the day
  • Making your product
  • Your workspace or workshop
  • Packing orders
  • People content

  • Team introductions
  • Customer spotlights (with permission)
  • Your story — why you started
  • Educational content

  • Tips related to your industry
  • How-to guides
  • Common questions answered
  • Myth-busting
  • Community content

  • Local events you're involved in
  • Collaborations with other Raglan businesses
  • Seasonal Raglan content
  • Supporting local causes
  • Social proof

  • Customer reviews (screenshot and share)
  • Before and after
  • Results and transformations
  • How Often Should You Post?

Consistency beats frequency. Pick a schedule you can actually maintain:

  • Minimum: 3 times per week on your main platform
  • Good: 4-5 times per week
  • Great: Daily, with Stories/Reels mixed in
  • One great post a week is better than 7 mediocre ones.

    The 15-Minute Daily Routine

Don't spend hours on social media. Here's a realistic daily routine:

  • 5 min: Check notifications, respond to comments and DMs
  • 5 min: Engage with other local businesses and community accounts
  • 5 min: Plan or create tomorrow's content
  • That's it. Batch-create content on a quieter day if you prefer.

    Hashtag Strategy for Raglan

    Use a mix of:

  • Local: #Raglan #RaglanNZ #WaikatoNZ #RaglanLife
  • Industry-specific: Related to your niche
  • Community: #SupportLocal #ShopLocal #RaglanBusiness
  • On Instagram, use 5-15 relevant hashtags. On other platforms, use 1-3 or none.

    What NOT to Do

  • Don't buy followers — Fake followers = zero customers
  • Don't only post promotions — Nobody wants a feed full of ads
  • Don't ignore comments — Every comment is a conversation opportunity
  • Don't copy competitors — Be inspired, but be yourself
  • Don't stress about perfection — Authentic beats polished every time
  • Measuring What Matters

Forget vanity metrics (likes, followers). Focus on:

  • Website clicks from social media
  • Direct messages from potential customers
  • Saves and shares (people finding your content valuable enough to keep)
  • Profile visits (people curious enough to check you out)
